The Denver Broncos won a Thursday night game they had no business winning. Denver beat the defending champion Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 6.
Wil Lutz kicked a 53 yard field goal with 4:53 left in overtime for the winner. The kick was set up when Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold at the Seattle 43 yard line on the first possession of overtime.
Denver led 14-3 at halftime on touchdown runs by J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. The Broncos then punted on six straight second half possessions and finished with just 168 total yards. Bo Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards with no touchdowns.
Seattle rallied in the fourth quarter. George Holani scored on a 1 yard run and a two point conversion cut the lead to 14-11. Jason Myers tied the game with a 34 yard field goal with three seconds left in regulation after a 31 yard punt return by Rashid Shaheed set the drive up.
Darnold finished 27 of 51 for 278 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards. Seattle outgained Denver 353 to 168 and still lost its second straight game to fall to 3-3. Denver moves to 4-2.
On the Prime Video postgame show, analyst Ryan Fitzpatrick sharply criticized Nix and his play at quarterback. Denver gets ten days off before its next game at Arizona. Seattle heads home with real questions after matching its loss total from all of last season.
