San Francisco is still perfect, but the second half nearly took it all away. The 49ers beat Washington 23-17 on Monday night to move to 6-0 as the league's only unbeaten team, in a game that was a blowout at halftime and a one play finish at the gun.
The 49ers led 20-3 at the half after outgaining Washington 303-90, and the lead reached 23-3 late in the third quarter. Then the game flipped. Washington outgained San Francisco 224-72 in the second half and Jayden Daniels drove the Commanders back inside one score.
Brock Purdy finished 21 of 29 for 264 yards with one touchdown to George Kittle and a 111.9 rating. Christian McCaffrey scored two rushing touchdowns and caught nine passes. Daniels went 29 of 40 for 300 yards with two touchdowns to Diggs and White.
The finish came down to one snap. Mustapha broke up the fourth down pass to Burks at the 17 with 1:54 left, and a game ending sack by Height and White closed it. The night also carried a cost on both sides. Terry McLaurin was carted off late in the first quarter with a knee injury, and Mike Evans caught three passes for 94 yards before exiting with an aggravated Achilles injury.
San Francisco survived the half it did not show up for. At 6-0, survive is enough.
