The Brewers beat the Rays 3-2 in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night at American Family Field, surviving a ninth inning that had fireworks going off before the final out.
Milwaukee scored twice in the first inning. Jackson Chourio singled, Christian Yelich tripled him home and William Contreras added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Tampa Bay got one back in the fourth on a Liam Hicks groundout, and Chourio drove in the run Milwaukee needed with an RBI single in the seventh to make it 3-1.
Then the ninth turned wild. A play that looked like a game-ending double play was overturned on review because Cooper Pratt pulled off the bag at second, a run scored and suddenly Tampa Bay had the tying run on third and the winning run on second. Closer Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca to end it, in the smoke from fireworks that had already gone off too early.
Jacob Misiorowski got the win, five innings and one run, with a first pitch clocked at 103.5 mph, reported as the fastest pitch in World Series history. Contreras reached base three times, drove in a run and threw out two Rays trying to steal. Tampa Bay went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
The Brewers are 8-1 this October and have won six straight postseason games. It is the first time Milwaukee has won a World Series game since 1982. The Rays are now 0-3 in World Series openers as a franchise.
Game 2 is Saturday night at 7:00 PM CT on FOX. Drew Rasmussen starts for Tampa Bay against Logan Henderson for Milwaukee. Rasmussen is a former Brewer, traded away in the Willy Adames deal, and he has allowed three runs in 19 postseason innings. If Tampa Bay loses again, it goes home down two games to none.
