Illustration of a Thursday night NFL game in Denver between Seattle and the Broncos

The defending champions are angry. Seattle (3-2) blew a home game to the 49ers on Sunday, falling 32-29 as 3.5-point favorites, and now the Seahawks fly to Denver on a short week to face a Broncos team that is also 3-2 and fresh off a 23-17 road win over the Chargers. The market has this as a coin flip with a lean: Seattle -2.5 on the road, total 40.5.

Start with the quarterbacks, because that is where this game gets decided. Sam Darnold was up and down against San Francisco: 195 yards, one touchdown and two picks. But the Seahawks still put up 29 on a good defense, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba keeps being the best receiver on the field, topping 100 yards for the fourth time in five games. Seattle's defense remains the calling card: 21 points allowed per game, 251 yards of offense per game, and a pass defense giving up under 167 yards a night. The linebacker room is thin with Drake Thomas (ankle) and Chazz Surratt (calf) both ruled out, and Zach Charbonnet (knee) is still out.

Denver's problem is the other side of the ball. Bo Nix is completing 59.9 percent of his passes at 5.8 yards per attempt, the Broncos average under 20 points and 269 yards a game, and Sean Payton just took the play-calling back from Davis Webb. The defense has a split personality: elite against the pass (79.4 rating allowed, five picks) but getting gashed on the ground for 145.2 yards a game at 4.7 a carry. And the secondary that was the strength is in pieces: Pat Surtain II (ankle) and Talanoa Hufanga (ankle) are out, Riley Moss (ribs) is questionable. Good luck covering JSN with the backups.

It will be cold, around 50 degrees at kickoff and dropping into the mid-40s, which favors the team that can rush the passer and play defense. That is Seattle. The Seahawks have won 60 percent of their games as favorites, Denver has covered once in five games, and the Broncos are 0-1 against the spread as underdogs of 2.5 or more. Short number, better team, better quarterback matchup. Lay the 2.5.

Betting angle

Seahawks -2.5 (-112). The board's play. The champs are laying less than a field goal against a Denver offense averaging under 20 a game with a quarterback completing 59.9 percent of his passes. Surtain and Hufanga are both out of the Broncos secondary and JSN has gone over 100 yards in four of five. Seattle's pass rush eats in the cold.

Under 40.5 (-108). The board's other play. Seattle allows 21 a game, Denver scores under 20, it is dropping into the 40s in Denver, and both pass defenses rank near the top of the league. Rock fight.

Seahawks ML (-142). The safer route. If you do not want the hook, take the champs straight up. Seattle has the better defense, the better receivers and the healthier secondary.
