The chalk toss finally happened in blue. LeBron James made his Philadelphia 76ers debut Thursday night at Barclays Center, tossing the chalk in a No. 23 Sixers jersey before a 114-108 preseason loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

The 41-year-old played the entire first half and sat the second, finishing with 10 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and a steal in 18 minutes. He attempted exactly one field goal all night, a second-quarter reverse layup off a Tyrese Maxey feed that put Philadelphia up 40-39, and got the rest of his points at the line, going a perfect 8-for-8 on free throws.

It was a playmaker's debut, not a scorer's. James opened the game finding VJ Edgecombe for a layup for his first assist as a Sixer, and spent the half quarterbacking an offense loaded with players used to having the ball. He started alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe, giving Philadelphia its first real look at the superteam it assembled this summer.

After sitting out Monday's preseason opener against the Knicks, James said he wanted real minutes to build rhythm with his new teammates. His own assessment afterward was patient.

"We're still trying to put each other in the position to be successful and complement each other the best way we can on the floor," James said, via BBC Sport. "But it's going to take some time."

"Tonight was a good sample size for us to build on," he added.

There were flashes of what this can become. One first-half sequence saw James slip a pass to Embiid, who moved it to Brown for a dunk. Maxey looked comfortable playing off the ball, knocking down two early threes. But there was also an airball from Embiid off an awkward catch on James' first pass of the night, a reminder that chemistry is not installed overnight.

This is James' record 24th NBA season and his first in Philadelphia after eight years with the Lakers and a two-year deal signed in July. The Sixers are managing him carefully: the 41-year-old is dealing with chronic arthritis in his left foot and sciatica in his lower back, and the season plan was always going to include maintenance days. A controlled 18-minute preseason run fits that plan exactly.

Betting angle

There is no betting takeaway from a preseason box score, and anyone selling you one is selling something. The real angle is what the debut confirmed about the season: this team will be load-managed within an inch of its life. A 41-year-old with a maintenance plan, a 32-year-old center with his own injury history, and a brand-new superteam that needs reps together but cannot afford to grind for them.

That makes the Sixers' regular-season win total the most interesting number on the board, and it makes it a stay-away until we see how aggressive the rest plan is. The title odds will tempt you after nights when the passing looks like this. Remember the other nights, the ones where three stars sit and the team loses by 20 in February. Bet the availability, not the highlights.
