I will say it plain, because waiver runs close Monday and this one will not wait for you. The best add in fantasy basketball right now is not a hot scorer. It is a Detroit backup who got the job handed to him on Friday night. His name is Paul Reed, and Friday night told you everything.
Detroit beat Miami 128-111 on Friday, and the game turned on an injury nobody wanted. Jalen Duren left midway through the second quarter with a right hamstring strain and did not return. Reed stepped into that opening and posted 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists in 26 minutes, the exact kind of injury fallout line our fantasy basketball HQ page flags first. He shot 8 of 11, started the second half in Duren's place, and filled the box score while Detroit improved to 2-0.
Here is why this is not a one night story. Detroit announced on Sunday that Duren is out with the right hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, around November 8. The Pistons gave no return date beyond that check, and re-evaluated does not mean back. Reed starts at Philadelphia on Sunday, and the starting window in front of him now runs for multiple games, not one fill-in night.
The honest check is the ceiling. Reed is not a season long answer if Duren comes back healthy, and nobody should pretend he is. He is a hold through the two week re-evaluation window with a clear role, a clear team need and a clear stat shape, rebounds and efficient scoring, and that is exactly what a waiver add is supposed to be. You are adding the opening, not a promise.
The rest of this week's wire backs the same rule, take the role and let the box score follow. Darius Acuff Jr. scored 33 points in his second career game for Sacramento, Ty Jerome scored a career high 45 points as Memphis's starting point guard, Dyson Daniels posted 7 steals for Atlanta, Ajay Mitchell posted 5 steals for Oklahoma City and Kel'el Ware posted 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for Milwaukee. Every one of those lines is a role showing up in a real game.
Make the Reed add today, before Monday's slate makes Friday's line old news for everybody else too. And if you want the full picture before you spend the move, the fantasy basketball HQ page tracks that same 19 point, 11 rebound injury fallout alongside the rest of the week of October 26 wire.
By Kingston O'Neal, who adds the opening before the league adds the player.
