Opening night is a math problem before it is a basketball game, and the math at Madison Square Garden does not work. Philadelphia rolls out Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid as its five primary options. Those five carry a combined 134 percent career usage. There is one basketball. Do the division yourself, because somebody's line is getting cut tonight and your lineup needs to know whose.
That is the whole Garden story for fantasy. Five stars who each built a career as a first option cannot all eat like first options. Usage is the scarcest currency in fantasy basketball on opening night, and our fantasy basketball HQ page tracks which of the five super users keeps his share and which one gives it up. Watch the first half closely. The odd man out in this rotation is a sell high name by Friday if the pattern holds.
The other swing game is in San Antonio, where Chet Holmgren returns for Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals rematch with the Spurs. A healthy Holmgren changes two lineups at once. His blocks and boards come straight back into the Thunder column, and every San Antonio big loses a little air across from him. If you streamed a Spurs frontcourt name for opening week, tonight tells you whether that stream survives the week.
Opening night advice is simple. Do not panic over one quiet line from a star sharing the ball, and do not ignore a role that clearly changed. The first real box scores of the season are the loudest signal you will get all month. The full fantasy basketball HQ page has the opening night breakouts board, the schedule watch and the waiver wire, and it updates with tonight's real lines first thing in the morning.
By Kingston O'Neal. Fantasy is my desk, and opening night is my favorite box score of the year.
