Clippers Go to War With Adam Silver Over Historic Salary Cap Punishment
The Los Angeles Clippers are done playing defense. Steve Ballmer's legal team is now publicly accusing the NBA of running a biased investigation into the Kawhi Leonard salary cap scandal, calling it an effort to fulfill a predetermined narrative. The team vowed to challenge the league's findings and penalties through every avenue available to it.
The punishment they are fighting is the harshest ever handed to an NBA franchise. The league fined the Clippers $30 million, stripped five first-round draft picks covering 2029 through 2033, suspended Ballmer from all league and team activities for one year, suspended president of business operations Gillian Zucker without pay for one year and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank without pay for six months. Leonard himself was fined $700,000 but avoided suspension. The organization also faces five years of league compliance monitoring.
The year-long probe began after investigative journalist Pablo Torre reported that the Clippers had funneled money to Leonard through Aspiration Partners, a now-bankrupt company with close ties to Ballmer, in what looked like endorsement pay for nothing in return. The investigation later found the team had affirmatively set up off-court income for Leonard with three more team vendors: Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance. The league called it a pattern of misconduct and noted the Clippers were a prior offender of circumvention rules. Leonard's former business manager Dennis Robertson, known as Uncle Dennis, was banned from doing business with NBA teams for five years.
The fallout has already reshaped the franchise. Leonard was traded back to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap and two second-rounders. Ballmer first said the team vehemently rejected the findings, then reversed course on September 13, saying the team would comply, confirming the fine was paid and apologizing to fans, employees and fellow owners. Now the legal team is back on offense against Silver.
What it means
This is now a public war between one of the league's richest owners and the commissioner, and it is not ending quietly. A five-year stretch with no first-round picks guts any rebuild, and Tyronn Lue is coaching a roster stripped of its stars with the front office in turmoil. The Clippers had made the playoffs 15 straight seasons. That streak, and the franchise's entire direction, is now in serious doubt while Ballmer fights the league in public.
