Five teams ranked in the top eight lost on Saturday. It had never happened before in the 90-year history of the AP Poll, per ESPN Insights. By the time the night ended in Provo, the top of college football looked nothing like it did at breakfast.
Start in Athens, where Auburn stunned No. 1 Georgia 27-24. Georgia led 14-0 in the first quarter and Auburn scored 24 straight points. After Gunner Stockton tied the game late, he fumbled with 58 seconds left and Jared Smith recovered for Auburn. Alex McPherson kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 150 yards and a touchdown and ran 26 times for 115 yards and another score. It was Auburn's first win in Athens since 2005.
In Provo, No. 8 BYU beat No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24. Bear Bachmeier found Walker Lyons on third and goal with 1:47 left to retake the lead, and C.J. Carr's final pass from the BYU 8 fell incomplete as the fans rushed the field. Notre Dame's run of 16 straight wins, all by double digits, is over.
In Knoxville, No. 14 Tennessee beat Alabama 26-10 and shut the Crimson Tide out in the second half. In Bloomington, Ohio State ended Indiana's 22-game win streak 19-15. Florida upset Texas 27-24 in Austin, handing the Longhorns their second straight loss. No. 3 Miami was the highest ranked team to survive, and it needed double overtime to beat Florida State 43-35.
Georgia, Alabama and Texas losing on the same day had not happened since October 26, 1996. Sunday's poll will split first place votes between Miami, Ohio State and BYU, three resumes with almost nothing in common.
Miami is 6-0 with no ranked wins. Ohio State owns two ranked road wins and one loss. BYU owns the best single win of the weekend and started it ranked eighth. Whoever lands at No. 1, the playoff race runs through all three of them now.
