Bills at Rams: Primetime Belongs to the Home Team
Monday, 8:15 PM ET · SoFi Stadium, Inglewood · ESPN and ABC · NFL Week 5
The Bills walked into last week 3-0 and flying, and walked out 3-1 and staring at their arch rival. The 29-26 home loss to New England was Buffalo's first defeat, and the standings math is suddenly urgent: if the Bills lose at SoFi and the Patriots beat the Raiders, New England takes the AFC East lead eight days after Buffalo looked untouchable. Josh Allen has 13 total touchdowns against 3 interceptions, James Cook has 421 rushing yards, and Dalton Kincaid leads the pass catchers with 270 yards. But the defense that could not get stops against New England now flies cross-country on a short week into the loudest building in football.
The Rams are the team trending the other way. The 24-20 win at Philadelphia was a statement: a 14-point fourth-quarter rally, Matthew Stafford throwing for 317 yards, Kyren Williams punching in two touchdowns in the final eight minutes. Stafford gets his 2025 MVP celebration at SoFi on Monday night, and the building will be rocking. The defense is doing it without its marquee addition: Myles Garrett, the offseason blockbuster from Cleveland, is on injured reserve after September knee surgery and is not expected back until Week 6 at the earliest. Aaron Donald comeback rumors swirl, and Bills tackle Dion Dawkins sent Garrett a public get-well message this week. But the unit has held up without him, and Byron Young has 3.5 sacks.
The situational edges all point one way. The Rams are home in primetime on a celebration night, off their best win of the season, against a Bills team dealing with its first loss and a real divisional threat behind it. Los Angeles still trails the unbeaten 49ers by two games in the NFC West and needs this one badly. Stafford (1,189 yards) has not been sharp all year, but he was sharp when it mattered in Philadelphia, and the last meeting between these teams at SoFi was a 44-42 classic. The total sits at 54.5 for a reason: points are coming. The question is who gets the last word, and at home in October, that is the Rams.
Betting angle
Rams -3.5 (-102). The board's play. Primetime home favorite on Stafford's MVP night, off a 14-point fourth-quarter road comeback, against a Bills team that just took its first L and flew cross-country on a short week. Lay the field goal and the hook.
Over 54.5 (-118). The last SoFi meeting was 44-42. Allen and Stafford both sling it, both defenses give up chunk plays, and the total is begging for a track meet. If this is close late, the over is alive into the final minute.
